UK eVisa FAQs: Answers to Common Questions

The introduction of the eVisa system in the UK has transformed how individuals access and manage their immigration status. With an eVisa, individuals can view, update, and prove their UK immigration status entirely online. This post covers some of the most frequently asked questions about eVisas, offering clear answers and helpful guidance.

1. What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is an electronic visa that holds all your immigration details online. Unlike a traditional visa stamp or vignette in a passport, an eVisa is accessible only through the internet. For example, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) issues an eVisa to eligible individuals, enabling them to view and prove their immigration status using an online platform.

eVisas are a secure, digital alternative to traditional visa stamps and ensure that your status is easily accessible, even without your passport. They are currently available for many immigration routes, including those under the EU Settlement Scheme.

2. Who needs an eVisa, and how is it obtained?

Anyone coming to the UK on specific visa routes is likely to receive an eVisa instead of a physical visa. Individuals granted a visa to stay in the UK for six months or longer, under schemes such as the EU Settlement Scheme or other work and student visa categories, are typically provided with an eVisa.

You automatically receive an eVisa once your immigration application is approved by the Home Office UKVI. You will receive a notification via email, which includes instructions on how to access and view your eVisa.

3. How can I access my eVisa?

Accessing your eVisa is straightforward. Here are the steps to view it online:

  • Visit the online service – Go to the UK government’s View and Prove website for immigration status.
  • Sign in – Enter your login details, including your UKVI account credentials, which you created during your visa application.
  • Secure your account – Verify your identity using a one-time code sent to your registered email or phone number.

Once logged in, you’ll be able to view details of your immigration status, such as its expiry date, any conditions, and any restrictions attached to your stay in the UK.

4. Can I update my details on the eVisa?

Yes, eVisas can be updated to reflect changes in your personal information. It’s crucial to keep your eVisa details accurate, as incorrect or outdated information may lead to issues when proving your status or re-entering the UK.

Updates you can make include:

  • Contact information – Update your registered email address or phone number.
  • Personal information – For changes such as your name, passport number, or nationality, you need to submit evidence to the Home Office. 

All updates can be made through the UK government’s Update your UK Visas and Immigration details page, where you’ll find options to change each of these details. After updating, the changes will automatically reflect in your eVisa record.

5. How do I prove my immigration status with an eVisa?

Proving your immigration status with an eVisa is typically done online, which can be useful in various situations, such as applying for a job, renting property, or accessing NHS services. Here’s how it works:

  • Generate a share code – Through the View and Prove service, you can request a share code specifically designed for the entity that needs to verify your status (e.g., an employer or landlord).
  • Share the code – Provide the share code to the individual or organization needing verification. They will use this code to view your immigration status.
  • Status verification – The individual or organization can then access your eVisa information through a secure link provided by UKVI.

The share code is only valid for 30 days, ensuring temporary access to your immigration details while maintaining your privacy.

6. Do Children need UKVI accounts?

Children who hold leave to remain or enter in their own right or are dependent on a family member’s leave will need a UKVI account. A parent or guardian can create a UKVI account for their children and enter their contact details. 

7. What if I encounter issues with my eVisa?

If you experience issues accessing or proving your eVisa status, several options can help resolve common problems:

  • Technical difficulties – If you cannot log in or face technical problems, check that you’re using the correct login information. Ensure your contact information on file is up-to-date, especially the email and phone number used for verification.
  • Account assistance – If login issues persist, you can contact UKVI for support. They may ask you for additional details to verify your identity.
  • Incorrect information – Should you find errors in your eVisa record, report them immediately. This could include incorrect details about your immigration status or personal information. Log in to your UKVI account to update information or contact UKVI directly for assistance.

8. How do I use an eVisa to re-enter the UK?

When re-entering the UK, having an eVisa simplifies the process as your immigration details are already stored online. However, you still need to carry your passport or another travel document. UK border officers have access to your eVisa information, but having your documents ready can help avoid delays.

It’s also advisable to log in to your eVisa account before travelling to verify that all information is correct, including passport details, which must match your travel document.

9. Are there any risks to relying solely on an eVisa?

While eVisas provide a convenient way to manage your immigration status, certain risks exist:

  • Technical access – Since eVisas rely on online access, ensure you have a secure internet connection when accessing your account. Familiarize yourself with the UKVI’s “View and Prove” system before any urgent use.
  • Account security – Protect your UKVI account by using a secure, unique password. Regularly update your password to reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
  • Backup – In case of account issues, keep a record of your application reference number and relevant Home Office emails. Having these backups can assist UKVI in verifying your identity if needed.

10. Can I use my eVisa outside the UK?

You can access and share your eVisa status online from anywhere. If you’re outside the UK and need to prove your status to a UK-based organization, you can use the “View and Prove” service to generate a share code as usual. However, note that some countries may not be familiar with the UK eVisa system, so carry your passport and any relevant visa documentation for ease of travel and immigration checks.

11. What should I do if I lose access to my UKVI account?

If you lose access to the email or phone number linked to your UKVI account, promptly contact UKVI to restore your access. They will guide you through security checks to verify your identity and may require you to provide additional details from your application.

Maintaining updated contact information with UKVI is essential to avoid being locked out of your account. If your email or phone number changes, log in to update these details as soon as possible.

12. I do not have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) for my indefinite leave to remain, can I still create an eVisa?

You must first apply to transfer your proof of immigration status from a stamp or vignette in your passport to a BRP as soon as possible. You cannot create a UKVI account without having a BRP first. The No-Time Limit (NTL) application is free.

The Home Office UKVI will not issue BRPs from October 2024. If you have made an NTL application, you will receive a decision in due course and will be able to create a UKVI account with your passport and NTL application number. 

13. I have lost my BRP, do I need to apply for a replacement?

You can no longer apply for a replacement BRP. 

If you have lost your BRP or it has been stolen and you have another identity document, such as a passport, you can create your UKVI account using this document. You should ensure you have either your lost BRP reference number and/or your Unique Application Number (UAN) from your previous application and grant of leave which you can use to link your current status to your eVisa.  

14. My BRP expires on 31 December 2024. Does my leave to remain also expire on this date?

All new BRPs now expire on 31 December 2024, and from 01 January 2025, you must prove your immigration status electronically with your eVisa. You can find the expiry date of your leave to remain or enter on your Home Office-issued decision letter or email. 

15. My BRP expires before 31 December 2024, what shall I do?

If your BRP expires before 31 December 2024, your leave to enter or remain likely expires on the same date and you must take steps to apply for further leave to remain before the expiry date. 

16. What do I need to carry when travelling internationally?

From 01 January 2025, you will only need to carry your passport to travel internationally as long as you have created a UKVI account and linked your passport to your eVisa before you travel. 

If you are travelling in 2024, you should carry your passport and BRP card or other proof of immigration status until it expires. 

Given the new system, we advise that you continue to carry your physical immigration document until the electronic system is fully operational.

17. Can I travel if I have not created a UKVI account and/or do not have eVisa?

If you have indefinite leave to remain, you can continue to travel in early 2025, using your passport and legacy document. This includes if you are waiting for a decision on your NTL application or citizenship application. 

However, please continue to monitor the government website page for updates. 

18. What should I expect in the future with eVisas?

The UK government has been increasingly adopting digital solutions for immigration management, and the use of eVisas is expected to expand. This shift aims to streamline immigration processes, reduce reliance on physical documents, and enhance security. In the future, individuals may find even more options and flexibility with eVisas.
